Reduced ice number concentrations in contrails from low-aromatic biofuel blends

چکیده
Abstract. Sustainable aviation fuels can reduce contrail ice numbers and radiative forcing by cirrus. We measured apparent emission indices for with varying aromatic content at altitude ranges of 9.1–9.8 11.4–11.6 km. Measurement data were collected during the ECLIF II/NDMAX flight experiment in January 2018. The varied both quantity type. Between a sustainable fuel blend reference Jet A-1, maximum reduction 40 % was found. show vertical number extinction distributions three different calculate representative optical depths. Optical depths contrails (0.5–3 min age) reduced to 52 compared fuel. Our measurements suggest that result particle numbers, coefficients, depth climate impact from contrails.

Cirrus, contrails, and ice supersaturated regions in high pressure systems at northern mid latitudes
During the European heat wave summer 2003 with predominant high pressure conditions we performed a detailed study of upper tropospheric humidity and ice particles which yielded striking results concerning the occurrence of ice supersaturated regions (ISSR), cirrus, and contrails. Our study is based on lidar observations and meteorological data obtained at Lindenberg/Germany (52.2 N, 14.1 E) as ...
متن کاملEnhanced Sea Ice Concentrations from Passive Microwave Data
1. Introduction Sea ice concentration is usually defined as the fraction of ice covered area within an observational field, which in our case is the footprint of the satellite sensor. This assumes that the ocean surface is binary, i.e., either ice covered or ice free. With the binary characterization of the ice covered surface in mind, ice concentration can be quantified from satellite instrume...
متن کاملSmall Molecule Ice Recrystallization Inhibitors Enable Freezing of Human Red Blood Cells with Reduced Glycerol Concentrations
In North America, red blood cells (RBCs) are cryopreserved in a clinical setting using high glycerol concentrations (40% w/v) with slow cooling rates (~1°C/min) prior to storage at -80°C, while European protocols use reduced glycerol concentrations with rapid freezing rates. After thawing and prior to transfusion, glycerol must be removed to avoid intravascular hemolysis. This is a time consumi...
متن کاملPhotochemistry of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cosmic water ice
Context. Mid-infrared emission features originating from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are observed towards photon dominated regions in space. Towards dense clouds, however, these emission features are quenched. Observations of dense clouds show that many simple volatile molecules are frozen out on interstellar grains, forming thin layers of ice. Recently, observations have shown that...

However, the term " contrail " is also used to refer to the short trails sometimes briefly appearing over aircraft wings or engine propellers, especially under mild, humid conditions. These contrails consist entirely of atmospheric water that c...
